2011 Workshop schedule…..
All workshops will include the use of both the Acorn Gallery as well as the Historic Black Bear Inn sites, depending on the focus of each day. Lunch at the Inn each day is included. All classes are 9am to 4pm unless otherwise stated. Easels will be provided. Supplies list will be sent upon registration. Class size is limited for greater attention to the student.
Raney’s classes are fun, low key, very informative and helpful – no matter your current level or medium. Raney works in pastel, watercolor, oil and acrylic and is equally adept at them all. Her style is abstract to the representational. The diversity of her talent and natural teaching ability make your class time an exceptional value and the mountain scenery creates a beautiful surrounding in which to work.
Rogers majored in art at East Carolina University and studied under internationally know artists such as Daniel Greene, Robert Bateman, Charles Frace, Heiner Hertling, Sallie Middleton and more. She is an award winning artist whose work is in private and corporate collections throughout the world. She has traveled abroad as well as within North America to paint plein air and experience new places. Raney is a member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina and the North Carolina Wildlife Artist Society. She has owned the Acorn Gallery in West Jefferson since 1994, the first art gallery in what is now known as the “Arts District”.
Raney is host of the “Art and Soul Network” featuring her work and interviews with other artists of all mediums, demonstrations, Q&As and creative approaches to living for enriching the soul.
The Historic Black Bear Inn and Acorn Gallery are both conveniently located to nearby lodging, restaurants and shopping. Information will be sent upon registration.
Registration is required a minimum of 15 days prior to class, a fifty percent deposit must be made upon registration and the balance due before commencement of class. Visa, Discover , Mastercard or checks are accepted.

Watercolor Techniques to Adapt the Flow and Intensity of Your Painting…
….to the effect you want to create your unique style. Learn tips for abstract to representational painting, depending on how far you want to take your piece. These are practices used frequently by Raney. Still life set-up available for those interested. May bring photographs and weather permitting, we will paint outside one day. Demo each day and gallery tour.

Painting Plein Air
Painting outside will be the main focus, though students should bring photographs to work inside in case of inclement weather. A covered porch area is available unless it is also windy at which point we will work inside. Techniques taught for landscape painting and learning to interpret and simplify nature. Daily sketch journal tips. Demo each day and gallery tour.

Techniques to Paint a Portrait
Techniques learned from Daniel Greene to attain a likeness quickly and accurately. Demo with live model. Learn to translate techniques to photographs. Bring a photo of a loved one – person or animal – and we will finish a portrait in one day. It is easier than you might think!

Painting Loose and Loving It
Color and Shape is the focus and ways to make your work pop by use of application and subject matter. This class will use a more intuitive approach to painting to unleash creativity and keep the flow going. Your imagination will be your camera and your interpretation guided. Great class for fresh energy and removing creative blocks. Color relationships will be addressed.

June 6-8th
Art and Health
Demo and instruction from Raney as well as application techniques for learning how the creative processes are at work in your physical being. About three quarters of the time will be painting and the remainder in exercise for bringing in and processing the power of the creative self for improved health. Gallery tour. Any medium. July 15-17th
Wildlife and Landscape Painting
For members of NCWAS as well as other wildlife and landscape painters. Will focus on the most common problems with landscape painting and wildlife depiction. Includes review of art elementals as well.
Special dinner Saturday evening at the Inn at $35 per person. Details provided at the time of reservation.
August 1-3rd
Painting in a Metaphysical Realm
All mediums. Learn how to interpret the messages your art is sending from visuals not “of this world”. Great way to open your creative process and bring the “soul” into your art. Freestyle subject matter. Learn how you respond to shapes, color and rhythm in your work. Demo each day. Gallery tour.
August 29-31st
Art and Soul
Explore how to unleash your passion for creativity and apply it to your work surface. All mediums. Raney will share deeper dimensions of her work and how art changes relative to your level of understanding. The wisdom, knowledge and understanding of art create your soul’s expression. Artist demo each day. Gallery tour. Daily demo.
August 3
Saturday workshop
Learn how to work from a photograph and capture your image in one day. All mediums. Great fun and surprise ending to the painting day! Great way to paint gifts for friends and family that are meaningful and long lasting.
September 5-7th
Learn from the Masters
Choose a masterpiece and learn how to understand and apply the techniques to create your own copy. Always sign “after” just to be sure no one gets them confused! Any medium. Great way to pick up techniques to use in your own creations. Artist demo each day. Gallery tour.
September 26th – 28th
Learn to Paint Fall – Even the Leaves!
What chaos of color the fall season brings. Come and paint in the mountains when the color is just turning and the contrasts of greens, oranges, yellows and reds is at its greatest. Plein Air when weather permits and bring a photo for reference if it rains. Artist demo each daya. All mediums.
Saturday workshop October 1
Color Splash!
Learn about colors during the mountain color explosion. Design a painting using the fall array of color as reference for your painting. Infuse another dimension with natural embellishments – create movement on your piece for a multi-dimensional surface. All mediums. Basic elements, extra tools and utensils provided. Great practice for interior decoration touches.
